I am writing about changing approaches to mountains in the late 19th century. I'm particularly interested in the shift from 'mystical' Romantic and Ruskinian attitudes to a more recreational, pragmatic approach in which mountains were seen as the venue for outdoor sports. I am currently working on a chapter on the implications of the codification of mountaineering in Britain in the 1880s and 1890s, with particular reference to the Scottish Highlands.
