Thesis Title: War neurosis and civilian mental health in Second World War Britain

Joanna Bourke

About

I am interested in the history of mental health and psychiatry, and in changing conceptions of psychological trauma. I completed my MA at Birkbeck in 2008. My MA dissertation focused on the relationship between gender and class in psychiatric history. In my PhD, I am investigating the interpretation and experience of civilian mental health in Second World War Britain. My primary focus in the PhD is on the psychiatric experience of civilians, both inside and outside psychiatric institutions, and the ways in which that experience was shaped by medical discourse in the context of the economic and social exigencies of wartime British society.
