About
My thesis focuses on two important periods in the life of Thomas Overbury, the famously murdered Jacobean politician - his time as a student at the Middle Temple c.1600, and the height of his political power c.1612 - and examines contemporary dramatic representations of such courtiers. I am interested in the interactivity of playwright, play and audience in early modern playhouses, and my work looks at how dramatists engaged with a particular sub-section of their audience, educated and ambitious young men, whose familiarity with the output of early modern playhouses added to their social status to make their response uniquely influential on the rapidly developing art form.
