My research interests lie in 19th- and 20th-century German literature and film, memory and the museum, intermediality and the historicity of media and gender studies.

I am currently working on a monograph which is concerned with representations of collecting and the museum in 19th and 20th century German literature.

I am particularly interested in how media of memory explore their own limits while also probing those of other medial forms through processes of imitation (‘intermediality’).

As a member of the steering committee for the Arts and Humanities Research Council-founded network "After the Wall: Reconstructing and Representing the GDR", I organised the workshop “Memory and Politics, Memory and Media” in April 2009 (Bristol) and contributed to the presentation of our research project and research results at the CUTG 2009 in Ulster and at the conference "Twenty Years on: Remembering the GDR and German Unification” (University of Bath).

I am on the steering committee of the new Birkbeck Research Centre “Representations in Kinship and Community” and together with my colleague Joanne Leal am organising a conference on “Gender and Memory” (30 September - 1 October 2010).

I am co-writing a monograph on Crossdressing in Early German Film Comedies (with Christine Mielke, a colleague from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany) and contributing an article on the same topic for the Blackwell Companion to German Cinema.

I am Programme Director of the MA Modern Languages: German Studies, and I also teach and examine on the MA European Cultures, the MA Museum Cultures and the MA Cultural Memory at the Institute of Germanics and Romance Studies.

Before coming to Birkbeck in 2006, I taught at the University of Mannheim (Germany) and at the University of Cambridge (2001-2003). In 2005 I had a HRC Visiting Fellowship at the ANU (Canberra, Australia).
