About
This thesis is a life cycle of 18th century silk; from the production of raw silk in the Mediterranean and Bengal, its processing in London into cloth; and then its consumption in the capital and the American colonies.
The aim is contribute to a global 'history from below' emphasising alternative networks from those often presented in other accounts. These include the dependency of the London industry on remote supplies of raw material; the migration of silk weavers both into and out of London; smuggling as a means of supplying consumer demand for French or Indian silks; the differences in taste between English and American markets.
I am a co-organiser of the conference The Many Headed Hydra: Plebeians in the World c.1660-1820 which will be held at Birkbeck, University of London on April 12, 2012. http://www.history.ac.uk/events/event/3724
